As consumers buy more and more clothes, the fast fashion industry has flourished. More clothing is being produced than ever, leaving Mother Earth to deal with many issues, such as climate change, deforestation, a decline in biological diversity, water scarcity, pollution, etc.

Considering these environmental issues, a change is much needed. From raising awareness about sustainable fashion to taking an active part in effecting change, we need a positive difference for good.

Being an eco-friendly online retailer, we at Mixed Roots Foundation fully favor going sustainable. What better and smarter way to do so than to purchase only from sustainable brands intentionally. It will help make a difference to the planet and its people.

How Does Sustainable Fashion Help The Environment?

Let’s look at how ecological fashion may help reduce environmental impact and why it’s better to makeshift to sustainable and ethical fashion.

  • Sustainable Fashion Creates Less Waste

Research indicates that 97 percent of what goes into creating garments is fresh resources, with only 3 percent of these components being recycled. These materials comprise oil for synthetic fibers, fertilizers for cotton, and an endless list of chemicals for dyeing and finishing. In comparison, sustainable brands focus on clothing products made using materials and finishes that are kind to the environment.

The clothing produced by fast fashion brands isn’t made to last. These brands aim to get you to buy more, so why would the focus be on creating quality, long-lasting clothing? In choosing sustainable brands that provide quality, you can reduce toxic waste and the amount of clothing you buy (also saving you money).

  • Sustainable Fashion Requires Less Water

Water is the primary source in our world and the fashion industry. Water is used not just to wash clothes but also throughout the manufacturing, dyeing, and finishing processes.

In contrast, Sustainable Fashion promotes organic fabrics created from linen, hemp, and organic cotton, which use little to no water throughout the manufacturing process.

  • Sustainable Fashion Helps Reduce CO2 And Other Greenhouse Gases Emission

The fashion industry emits many greenhouse gases per year resulting from material creation, manufacturing, transportation, and even textile waste. One of the reasons is that most of our clothes are petroleum-based and made from fossil fuels, including polyester, acrylic & nylon. These materials require more significant energy than natural or recycled fibers.

On the other hand, sustainable brands use biodegradable materials, such as linen, hemp, or organic cotton, which require little to no chemical treatment, minimal water, less energy, and no fertilizers or pesticides to grow. These materials are eco-friendly and are kind to the environment.

  • Sustainable Fashion Helps Save Animal Life

If you weren’t aware, the fashion industry is guilty of killing animals for fashion. It is estimated that the leather industry alone is slaughtering more than 430 million animals for their skins each year.

Fur is another substance for which the fashion industry exploits animals. Although, people have been more aware of the need to avoid the usage of genuine fur in clothes in these past years.

In comparison, sustainable clothing brands worldwide have started to encourage cruelty-free and vegan substitutes by using leather and fur substitutes in their products. This helps save animals from endless slaughtering and death while preserving the balance of the ecosystem.

The Bottom Line

Since fashion and clothing play such an important role in our everyday lives, it is incredibly important for us to affect change in it. Even if we may not be able to influence the operations of a fashion company directly, it’s in our hands to go for a sustainable approach when buying apparel online or in-store.
